Monuments in Chioggia: Porta Garibaldi
|
The gateway into the city, it was once called the porta di S.Maria, probably because of the valuable capital of Madonna di Marina situated within it together with a plaque commemorating the passage of Pope Pius VII.
Its arched structure dates back to 1530 and was originally part of the city’s defense fortifications. Through it one enters Corso del Popolo, Chioggia’s main street, commonly referred to as a “piazza” by the local populace. |
