Saint Dominic may be reached by dry land over the bridge which bears the same name. The island, which once belonged to the Benedictine monks, was passed to Dominican preachers around 1200. Later in 1287 a convent and church were built. The chosen location was central because a bridge connected the island to Chioggia a Sottomarina. The ancient Romanic-style basilica did not have the same dimensions then that it does today, in fact it was after its demolition in 1745 that the temple was rebuilt according to the project of Pietro Pelli. Throughout the centuries, the church suffered the consequences of various historical events.

From the abolition of the order decreed by the Serenissima to the occupation by Napoleon’s army. Currently the church is a parish and sanctuary for the famous and imposing miraculous Crucifix. All that remains of the old temple is the Romanic-style bell tower with its splendid mullioned windows.

The Crucifix

According to modern critics the crucifix dates back to 1300. Many myths and legends are told regarding this simulacrum, its origins and provenience. The whole population has passed it reverently but especially the fishermen who, in this Christ, see an emblem, a port, salvation.

The numerous votive offerings preserved within the church are a testament of graces received. One who gazes upon the Christ from the left side sees him in his moment of pain and agony, whereas from the right side in the serenity of death. The cross is made with logs and on its upper extremity is carved a pelican which, in religious symbology, represents the sacrifice of Christ who sacrificed himself on the cross for the saving of his people, as the pelican tears his breast to feed his young. Throughout the centuries, the imposing crucifix was brought in a procession outside the church only six times because, due to its immense size, the portal had to be demolished and then rebuilt each time.
