Church of the Filippini

Church of the Filippini

Erected in 1772 by the decree of Count Ludovico Manin, father of the last Doge of Venice who had in the past contributed to the erection of the Oratory, where the community of the Filippini congregated to celebrate liturgical rites.

Within the church is composed of a single nave flanked by golden chapels decorated with stuccoes and frescoes; the presbytery, which is quadrangular in form, appears to be raised.

The ceiling fresco (10,23 x 3,23 meters) is impressive and was done in only 14 days by Giacomo Casa in 1865.

It depicts the Virgin which Saint Philip venerated and, in the lower part of the painting, the founding fathers of the Filippino oratory of Chioggia intent on presenting the church design to Count Manin.
